This is Hany Farid. He is a computer science professor at Dartmouth, and he has developed a program to tell whether or not photographs have been "significantly" altered during their editing process.

He is also a staunch supporter of the "Self Esteem Act" (psshhh). Which would require images that have been "significantly" altered to be labeled.

&I just have to say:

Bollocks! We're all good looking and we're all kinda ugly. Deal with it! It's a photographer's JOB to edit photos and make the shot look as good as we can.

Ansel Adams edited the crap outta his photos in the darkroom, but you don't hear a bunch of people crying out for an asterisk to be placed in the bottom right corner of all his photos. DO YOU??

Scopophilia

Nan Goldin (is an incredible photographer) has unleashed a new photo project to a certain amount of acclaim. It's called "Scopophilia" which roughly translated means something like "the love of vision".

Scopophilia is in the Louvre and Matthew Marks Gallery, but unless you're at one of those to exclusive places you really can't see much of the show. Who knows why.

From what I understand Nan was given free rein to photograph in the Louvre (lucky so and so) and then took the photos she made of other people's art in the Louvre and paired them with either new(?) or old(?) photos of her own to "make the art come alive".

It's all very deep and involved if you really look into it. All I know is that it is some of Nan's best and most beautiful work to date. Rock on sister cuz!

Check it out! "So, I work in an art museum" features work from eight artists working in five art museums across the Front Range area in Colorado. (Sounds like a cool show).

The opening reception is on Saturday Nov. 12 from 6-10pm, and work will remain on display until December!

I shot 18 new stunning pieces of jewelry for Continuum this past week.

I also got a job at ProDPI. They're a printing company here in Denver that prints just about anything you can think of! There's really cool stuff and really cool machines all over the place where I work. There was even chilli one day!

I just saw the new Composer Pro that lensbaby released the other day and I'm here to say that it is one fine piece of photo equipment! When I got home I immediately wanted to put my lensbaby on my camera so I did.

I took a photo of my favorite photo I've ever made. It was up at an AiCO gallery show for a month or so and if it had sold for $10,000 it would have made me very happy. It didn't sell, but now I'm happy I get to look at it on my wall.

So this might not be terribly current, but it's awesome nonetheless. Shrek & friends do a spread for Vman. I don't think any of us can honestly be surprised, Shrek is steppin' out on Fiona, Puss 'n Boots is gay (duh), and Donkey is a freak.

Awesome combination of animation and photos!

Art & Soul is a photo book full of really beautiful celebrity portraiture. It's awesome because all the portraits are kinda the same but totally different at the same time. Brian Smith is clearly a wonderful photographer, but is apparently also a great human being. He is full of tips and encouragement for us newbie photographers! Thanks Bri (It's cool that I call you Bri right?)

Speaking of newbie photographers, garyguild.com has gotten some updates! A new commercial gallery. I feel like it's not enough to just demonstrate technical photo skills within the confines of artistic concepts alone. You have to also be able to show potential employers that you can combine technical skills with concepts based in commerce if you want a job. So there's that.

ISO 1200 magazine also did a little spot on my ice portraits video. This was back in August and I've forgotten to mention it, but it made me feel awesome!

And lastly, You Are Not A Photographer Blog. A hilariously brutal blog bashing bad photography on the interweb.

Very entertaining, although I do have to disagree with part of their slogan, "... You can't buy talent." You CAN, in fact, buy talent. All you gotta do is write me a check! ;)

More than paper cranes.

Not so long ago a friend of mine (Talia Kauk) created a public art project centering around helping to fund the tsunami relief in Japan. (Maybe you read about it in the Denver Post?) She made paper cranes and attached an oragami QR code to the ends of the cranes so that people passing by could scan the code and donate to the tsunami relief.

The cranes were ultimately taken down by the Denver Art Museum. But I just read on Talia's blog that her project has inspired other people who are incorporating her crane idea with ballet. So exciting. Talia, you're amazing.

About a month ago I challenged James Franco (a.k.a. Bambi) to an art duel. The challenge was to create 5 pieces of art around 3 nouns and 3 verbs (sky, creature, instinct, explore, let, write).

Well, surprise surprise I never heard from Bambi. I think he must be some sort of pacifist or something. At any rate this duel has been called on account of me making it rain (art).

I made my 5 pieces, and I went ahead and did 5 more because Franco was a no-show. The new series will be up at garyguild.com soon.

I sent out my first promo to the record company yesterday. Actually I sent a submission into LensWork. Did you know (aside from consistently publishing really great work) they pay people who get published in their magazine?! What a concept! Wish me luck y'all!

And the job situation in Colorado has some potential light on the horizon, although moving is inevitable. I've snazzed up the resume even more, and have started making .pdfs specific to the jobs I'm applying for.

One of my favorite photo blogs to visit is The Talia Kauk Photography Experience. However, this post is only 20% plugging Talia's blog and 80% why I hate wordpress.

Since the beginning of wordpress' rise in popularity their sites (8 times outta 10) look like that^ when I visit them. I don't know if my computer has a personal vendetta against wordpress, if my wireless internet connection can't handle them, or what. But it's been too long and I just can't stand it anymore. Aye dios mio, Wordpress, get yo act together. Bloggers are counting on you to be top notch (and you aren't).

Franco, James! Where you at?

So, Hollywood star Franco, James branched out from acting in 2010 and got a lot of acclaim for his (ahem) art. It aggravates me. Franco, you're my art-nemesis now (yeah, it's so serious it's a hyphenate). I'm the one who should be having packed openings at art galleries in New York!

I'd like to publicly challenge Franco. An impartial judge chooses 3 verbs and 3 nouns and we each create a mini series around said nouns and verbs (5 pieces). Then we both exhibit the work at Milk Gallery and you can taste the taste of defeat Jimmy!

Only problem is... I don't think he subscribes to my blog. Anybody know how to get in touch with senor Franco? 'Cause it's on!

Perhaps you recall a few blog posts ago me freaking out over a couple of no reshoot situations. Well, the wedding went fantastic. The coordinator left us without a space for formal shots after the ceremony, but we pulled it together and came away having had a great time and taken lots of beautiful photos!

Oh, yes I did!

Because everybody loves a sharp dressed photo, no? (Yes.) New logo and new website cooking for graduation. The closer graduation gets the more I feel things beginning rather than ending.

information on bonding plexiglass together (not to mention the plexiglass)
for the print lab to operate cooperatively all quarter long
a new computer, camera, tattoo, and job.

It's happening tomorrow! The Emerging Exposures gallery show is the final result of The Sabin World School's Photography Club (Started from the ground up by Amy Blomquist and Jill Mott.) that myself and several other volunteers from AiC helped with two terms ago. The show is tomorrow night at the school and the kid's photos look awesome and I'm sure they'll sell out the show!

FLASH IS ALIVE!

With the introduction of products like the iPhone and the iPad flash websites (a favorite of photographers world wide [haha, web]) seemed like they were on their way out. The two major problems were: 1. Apple products don't support flash so people couldn't view your site on their mobile device. And, 2. Flash websites could not be optimized for search engines like google or mamma.

Well, those days are gone. The DROID hit the market supporting flash and making the iPhone look like a RAZR phone, psshh. And other companies all over the world are releasing iPad-esque devices that also support flash. That's problem number 1 nixed!

I also just found a new section in my customization area for my flash website that enables search engine optimization!

Sorry Mr. Jobs, but you fought the flash and the flash won!

Talia Kauk and Marc Roewekamp shot all the footage and I edited the final cut, and I think I speak for the whole group in saying we were pretty happy with ourselves and the final product.

I was trying to think of a way to use QR codes for a class assignment, and the only problem I have with them is that they don't look cool. So I tried altering the color and adding in little design elements, but changing the actual shape of the QR code made it unreadable. So, finally I tried putting an image straight up in that QR code! And it worked!

This weekend I'm shooting a wedding in Lawrence, KS. I really enjoy shooting the occasional wedding. Freezing spontaneous moments of joy with a camera is fun. The only thing is... there are no reshoots when you're the wedding photographer! You can't shout from the back row, "Hey, kiss again. I missed it."

And tomorrow I'm a trash man! I'm working with Alpine Waste this quarter for a documentary assignment in digital storytelling. I was suppose to have my first ride along Saturday, but some wires got crossed and now it's tomorrow and only tomorrow. No. Re. Shoots.

I guess I'll have to channel a little bit of my inner Charlie Sheen. And I quote, "I've got one speed. Go." Wish me luck everybody!

Quick Side Note (Speaking of President's Day):

Abraham Lincoln is my favorite president. Why? Well, for several reasons:

1st- He was, like, 18 feet tall. I bet Abe would have hugged me on National Hug a Tall Person Day.

2nd- For the Emancipation Proclamation. Firstly for freeing slaves, but mostly for having the artistic flare to make sure the name of the document rhymed.

3rd- For being America's first black president. It's my personal theory that Abraham Lincoln was a black man who decided the country needed change in 1809 and disguised himself daily as a white man so he could change the system from the inside out.

Sorry Barack (because you'll probably see this on your twitter feed), that makes you second on the list. I owe you a free portrait session to make up for bursting your bubble. 303-621-4052

Yeah, that just happened. I quoted Tyra Banks. (I didn't see it coming either.)

Don't get it twisted though! I'm not saying that my friend and model up there isn't beautiful.

I kinda found that quote to mean that photos of models aren't photos OF the model. They're actually photos of an attitude, emotion, or product that photographers are trying to present in the most beautiful way possible.

Anyways, I was editing these photos when I heard that quote and it just sorta stuck inmyhead so I wanted to make a little something that illustrated it.

Hug a Tall Person!

February 11th is National Hug a Tall Person Day, and I only got ONE hug. That's right, one! So I decided that Hug a Tally Day (as I affectionately refer to it) needed a little more publicity.

In creative concepts class this term at school we had to create something based around the word "Movement". I decided to take the opportunity to incorporate movement into a 20 second spot advertising for Hug a Tally Day. Enjoy. :)

Right now and through the entire month of March Tastes Wine Bar (Located at 1033 E. 17th Ave, Uptown, Denver) is showing An Exhibition of Night Photography by photographer Katherine Winter.

I went to the opening reception and was literally stopped mid-step while looking at some of the photos! The work being shown concentrates on the colors of light at night that (at least I think) are so often ignored by photographers that have done similar work.

If you are in the Denver area I promise you won't be disappointed by popping into Tastes, having a glass of wine, and treating your eyes to the beautiful mixtures of light at night Katherine has captured.

Absolut Ad Campaign

Anna Atkins and David Hockney. Two central figures in the history of photography. Which is why I decided to synthesize (I love it when I have the opportunity to use that word in a sentence.) their very specific styles into two Absolut Vodka ads for my advertising campaign class this quarter.

Anna Atkins was a botanist who developed an interest in photography (specifically cyanotypes) as a form of record keeping for her botanical samples. David Hockney began his art education as a painter, but found satisfaction in all sorts of artistic mediums. Most of his photo projects involved polaroid photography and gestalt panoramas.
