More than paper cranes.

Not so long ago a friend of mine (Talia Kauk) created a public art project centering around helping to fund the tsunami relief in Japan. (Maybe you read about it in the Denver Post?)  She made paper cranes and attached an oragami QR code to the ends of the cranes so that people passing by could scan the code and donate to the tsunami relief.

The cranes were ultimately taken down by the Denver Art Museum.  But I just read on Talia's blog that her project has inspired other people who are incorporating her crane idea with ballet.  So exciting.  Talia, you're amazing.

Say Wha?

On the realio though!  This could change the way I feel about wedding photography entirely!

Check out the youtube channel.
Check out Shane Deruise Photography.
And take a look at the BLOG.

This dude's awesome.

Almost Vinilla

New blurb books are almost cool!

What do you think?

Me- 1 | James Franco- 0

I know y'all didn't think I let this go.
About a month ago I challenged James Franco (a.k.a. Bambi) to an art duel.  The challenge was to create 5 pieces of art around 3 nouns and 3 verbs (sky, creature, instinct, explore, let, write).

Well, surprise surprise I never heard from Bambi.  I think he must be some sort of pacifist or something.  At any rate this duel has been called on account of me making it rain (art).

I made my 5 pieces, and I went ahead and did 5 more because Franco was a no-show.  The new series will be up at garyguild.com soon.

What's Awesome?

THIS STUFF IS AWESOME:

Blind Spot is awesome because they show a variety of work, and it's all awesomely excellent work.  They mix photo work with non-photo work avoiding things ever looking low rent. The magazine is dominated by the work because the designers give it the space it needs.  They be mixin' it up right.  Subscribe.

Seriously awesome photo book.  Some of THE most awesome/incredible buildings I've ever seen (and that I never would have seen without the book).  Check.  It.  Out.

The LindenBerry is awesome because you never know what you'll see next and there's always something new to see.  Built in awesome photos from Jason Rowe, awesomely inspirational videos, and tear sheets.  LindenBerry knows what's up.

Bartholomew Photography
Awesome because he was one of my favorite instructors at AiCO, and I got to assist on a shoot today.  Also there were pistachios, which means nothing less than Class & Dignity.

That's What's Awesome.

Hustling, Hustling.

I sent out my first promo to the record company yesterday.  Actually I sent a submission into LensWork.  Did you know (aside from consistently publishing really great work) they pay people who get published in their magazine?!  What a concept!  Wish me luck y'all!

And the job situation in Colorado has some potential light on the horizon, although moving is inevitable.  I've snazzed up the resume even more, and have started making .pdfs specific to the jobs I'm applying for.

Stop, Pause, Resume

So I have this friend.  This designer friend.  (Clarification:  when I say designer friend I mean, like, Vuitton ok?)  No but seriously, my friend Lauren is both designer and a graphic designer and she taught me something awesome.

If all the information on your resume takes up more than one page, just FLIP THE PAGE on its side!  Isn't she a genius?  Make your page 11x8.5 and you get more room.  And I happen to think it even looks cooler.

Don't thank me; thank Lauren.

JPW

Did I ever mention that Joel Peter Witkin is my Uncle?  No?  I guess that's because he isn't.  But I did meet him last year and never blogged about it.  I feel better now that that's taken care of.

P.s. He is the only known photographer in the U.S. that has out done me with fancy glasses!

Visual Variety

The owner of Optique of Denver was kind enough to invite students and graduates of AiCo to display work in her very charming optic boutique down town.

If you're looking for something to do on First Friday or just for a great way to start your night swing by August 5th for the reception (5-9 p.m.), have a glass of wine, and for Pete's sake buy some art!

Oh, and if you have a couple of extra seconds to spare, please click and vote for Optique of Denver for Channel 7's A list!

Wordpress Shmerdpress!

One of my favorite photo blogs to visit is The Talia Kauk Photography Experience.  However, this post is only 20% plugging Talia's blog and 80% why I hate wordpress.

Since the beginning of wordpress' rise in popularity their sites (8 times outta 10) look like that^ when I visit them.  I don't know if my computer has a personal vendetta against wordpress, if my wireless internet connection can't handle them, or what.  But it's been too long and I just can't stand it anymore.  Aye dios mio, Wordpress, get yo act together.  Bloggers are counting on you to be top notch (and you aren't).

P.S. Yeah, that is Nicki Minaj on my firefox.  SplaDOW!
